Movies
Scumdog Millionhairs! haha (aka Rod Blagojevich) I saw the movie last weekend and it was the BEST PICTURE hands down. Definitely a must see. The slum kids reminded me of the movie Tsotsi. Everything about it was great and I loved the music in it too. I still have to see Revolutionary Road and The Reader.
Other movies I’ve seen recently: The U.S. vs. John Lennon (good), Balls Out (horrendous, very raunchy, don’t watch it), and Burn After Reading (Coen brothers movie based in DC, what happens when idiots try to be gangsters).
Movies
I saw some more movies from Netflix: Man on Wire, Standard Operating Procedure, The Great Debaters and Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.
Man on Wire was an interesting story about the Frenchman who walked on a wire which was connected to the tops of each of the World Trade Towers in New York City. It was a great feat and I would recommend this doc, but not before…
…Standard Operating Procedure. This doc was surprising. It tells the story of Abu Graib prison in Iraq as told by the photographs and the people who took them. You see what the true, media-unfiltered circumstances and intent of what was happening there and why. I really liked this movie.
The Great Debaters, a Harpo Film (Mama Oprah!), takes you back to 1935 in Marshall, TX, home to Wiley College, an all black college. The debate team goes on to beat white schools. Very inspiring. “We do what we have to do, so we can do what we want to do.”
Harold and Kumar. Usually sequels come no where close to the magic of the original, but this one sure did. I loved it and it was SOOOO funny. HIGH-larious!
Wanted Movie

I want to see WANTED tomorrow. Angelina + Assassin Role + Guns = HAWT! Oh yeah, and James McAvoy (“Nee-kohl-ahs! You deed not perrrr-swaaaaade me!!!”) is in it too. Maybe we’ll drive out to WV and shoot some guns afterwards to get all our aggression out. In related news, DC can keep their guns.
Flix
Some movies I’ve just seen:
‘Away From Her’ - I liked it. Julie Christie looks great. I don’t know how old she is but she is definitely aging beautifully. I don’t think her performance as Fiona, which garnered her a Golden Globe for best actress, was as riveting as Marion Cotilliard’s in “La Vie en Rose” but it was good nonetheless. It’s interesting how no matter how old one is, one is still capable of playing games and holding grudges. I guess you just learn to hide it better as you get older. For some reason you’d think the elderly are all nice, sweet people but they carry just as much or more spite and resentment as any other person can.
‘Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance’ – This is a korean movie made by the same director as ‘Oldboy.’ Yeah, same weird stuff but no incest in this one. Just as much blood though. If you’re a ‘Hostel’ or ‘Saw’ fan then this is probably for you. Not my cup of tea, but I like how some Korean films have gotten gritty and unpredictable.
‘Charlie Wilson’s War’ – Didn’t believe Tom Hanks in this role as a Texan but after seeing a photo of the real Charlie Wilson, they do kind of look alike. The movie takes place around the time I was born (1980) and it was interesting to see the decor during that time. Ugly! Based on a true story, so I liked it.
‘Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired’ (HBO doc) - This aired Monday night and I saw it right away. I’ve heard of this story but never really got the deets. After watching this, there’s so much more to it than I originally thought. Yes, he did some shady stuff but this guy seemed to have some shitty luck. I can’t really blame him for fleeing after all the BS going with the case. One my favorite movies, “The Ninth Gate”, was directed by Roman Polanski. I haven’t seen Rosemary’s Baby yet, gotta put that on my queue.
The truth is…

I heart Robert Downey, Jr.! If it was anyone else, I wouldn’t have really cared about this movie. Reminiscent of ‘Transformers’, but entertaining and funny. Gwyneth was good in her role as Pepper Potts.
Dan in Real Life
This movie was pretty good. I love Steve Carell but strangely I don’t watch ‘The Office’. I hear he was a mailman in his pre-Hollywood life. This movie reminded me of ‘Failure to Launch’ but way better. Big families are both a blessing and a burden it seems. It was shot in Rhode Island. So gorgeous there, have to go.
Sex and the City Movie

Saw the movie last night with six other girls and it was fabulous. It had all the elements of the series; it was like watching a seventh season all in one sitting. I want to see it over and over again! The DVD better be out ASAP! I don’t remember the last time I went to see a movie on its opening night. Sequel? If it makes enough $$$ anything is possible!
Chances Are

I saw the movie “Chances Are” this weekend. Released in 1989, it stars Cybill Shepherd, Robert Downey, Jr., Ryan O’Neal, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Happy Gilmore’s nemesis, Christopher McDonald. I loved it! It’s an oldie but a goodie, as my co-worker would say. I also saw “27 Dresses” with Katherine Heigl but it wasn’t as good as this movie. It was so good I watched it twice!
Lars and the Real Girl

I saw Lars and the Real Girl the other night and I love it! I’m a huge fan of Ryan Gosling. He was nominated for a Golden Globe and plays Lars, a 27-year old introvert who is delusional and falls in love with, well… you’ll see. Watch it!
